Kevin came agonisingly close to a first major title in the 2004 Ladbrokes.com World Championship final, when he led Phil Taylor 4-1 before losing a classic encounter 7-6 in a deciding leg.
However, the former England international has been unable to capitalise on that run of form on the big stage, with a quarter-final defeat at Purfleet 12 months later being followed by another last eight appearance at the Las Vegas Desert Classic.
A leg injury sustained in early 2005 kept him out of action until the Budweiser UK Open, where he suffered an early defeat, and his woes continued with a first round exit at the World Matchplay.
Painter bounced back into form at the World Grand Prix - the venue where he announced his talents to the world by knocking out Taylor in 2001 - and again took on his 'nemesis' at Purfleet in the last eight later in 2005.
A former British Matchplay, British Open and England Open winner, Painter has the game to challenge for major honours for many years to come.
