Darts at Selsey
- England Open
With the prize
money having been increased to a record breaking
level it was very pleasing to see that the
fourth England Open staged at the ever
impressive Bunn Leisure by the England Darts
Organisation (EDO) saw a record number of
players fighting it out for not only the prize
money but also the very important Lakeside
points.
As well as players from the
British Isles there were also players from
Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Holland and
Poland who had made their way to West Sussex.
The first event of the long
weekend was the Early Bird competition, which
after a slow start last year really took off
this time and when entries were closed there was
a total of 104 players chasing the £1,000
winner's prize.
The whole event was closely
contested from start to finish and it was to be
the case in the final as Alan Norris edged an
eleventh leg decider over Dean Winstanley to
take the first title of the weekend. The losing
semi finalists were Mark Blandford and Andy
Beardmore.
As with many tournaments, the
first night saw a cash competition (this was not
included in the massive £27,000 put up by Bunn
Leisure) but it is a great start for many people
to the weekend. This year the EDO decided to run
a separate competition for both the ladies and
men and there was an amazing entry as 233 men
and 35 ladies entered the respective events
which saw £2,500 at stake and this was just a
curtain raiser.
The eventual winners were Scott
Waites who beat Danny Smith 3-2, the losing semi
finalists were Glenn Durrant and Andy Beardmore.
The Ladies winner was Lisa Ashton who beat
Lorraine Farlam 3-0 with the losing semi
finalists being Barbara Legge and Marlene
Badger.
Saturday saw the main events of
the weekend and there were a total of 161 ladies
and 524 men chasing the respective singles
titles, both records for the singles at Bunn
Leisure.
Both the defending champions
(Trina Gulliver & Dean Winstanley) were there to
try and take the titles again and for a long
time it looked as though they were on course to
achieve a double, but it came to an end in the
quarter finals for Dean as he lost to Ted
Hankey, whilst Trina went one better before
losing to Karen Lawman in the semi final.
With such a high quality field it
was inevitable that there would be some shock
casualties but by the time the quarter finals of
the Mens Singles was reached there was still
eight International players fighting for the
£5,000 first prize.
During the weekend the EDO were
trialling some live streaming, unfortunately
there was a problem with the Bunn Leisure
broadband that didn’t allow for it to be
broadcast but it was a worthwhile exercise as
many things were learned for the future and all
four of the Mens quarter finals were played on
the dedicated board, which allowed a good crowd
to watch some very good matches which eventually
saw Ted Hankey, Benito van de Pas, Gary Robson
and Tony O’Shea take their place in Sunday’s
semi finals.
Meanwhile in the Ladies Singles
the quarter finals saw five of the current
England team, joined by players from Finland,
Wales and England and eventually the semi
finalists were Karen Lawman, Trina Gulliver,
Kirsi Vinikainen and Lisa Ashton.
In a very busy day the Ladies and
Mens Pairs were also played down to Sunday’s
final. In the Ladies it was the local Sussex
pairing and defending champions of Donna
Rainsley & Trish Kidd who once again reached a
Bunn Leisure final where they were to face Trina
Gulliver & Lisa Ashton.
In the Men's Pairs the Surrey
pairing of Paul Neate and Aaron Turner beat Ross
Montgomery & Martin Adams to set up a final
against the defending champions Paul Hogan &
Paul Gibbs who beat Scott Waites & Garry
Thompson in their semi final.
So a long Saturday was finally
over and all that was left to play was the Mixed
Triples and the Youth events before the stage
finals.
There was a fantastic entry in the
youths as 16 girls and 62 boys set out on an
adventure that would lead to both winners
qualifying for the Winmau World Masters.
The eventual finalists were Stacey
Patterson (Derbyshire) and Stacey Ellis (Essex)
in the girl's with Nick Kenny (Gwent) and Craig
Brown (Isle of Wight) in the boy's.
In the Mixed Triples the two teams
reaching the final were Garry Thompson, Dave
Calvert & Dee Bateman who had to play David
Pallet, Ash Khayat & Linda Jones.
So the finals started in the
afternoon with a packed crowd, some of which
were watching from the newly installed Bunn
Leisure balconies.
The first matches to be played
were the Ladies Singles semi finals and both of
them were to go the full seven legs. In the
first game Trina Gulliver stormed into a 3-1
lead that included a 17 dart opening leg and a
118 shot out in the third leg, but Karen Lawman
hung in and when Trina missed the bullseye on 90
in the sixth leg to take the match Karen stepped
in to take the game to a deciding leg. Karen won
the bull to start the final leg and just 18
darts later a 75 shot out had secured her a
place in the final.
The second semi final was again a
closely contested game between Finland’s Kirsi
Vinikainen and Lisa Ashton. It ebbed and flowed
one way and then the other before Lisa missed
one dart to win 4-2 only for Kirsi to take out
56 to force a seventh leg decider. Lisa won the
bull for first throw but could not take
advantage and two more darts at a double proved
very costly as the lady who had travelled
further than anyone else to be there finished on
40 in 21 darts to take her place in the final.
The Mens Singles semi finals
started with Ted Hankey looking for his second
England Open title against yet another rising
star from Holland, Benito van de Pas,
unfortunately the youngster never got going to
show the form that has already seen him take the
German Open title and Ted took the match 5-0.
In the second semi final a much
closer match was expected between Tony O’Shea
and Gary Robson but Tony missed eight darts at a
double in the first leg and Gary took control of
the match as he took out a 146 finish for a
twelve dart leg in the fifth leg to move into a
4-1 lead. Tony rallies by taking the next two
legs, including a 12 darter of his own with a
101 shot out, but Gary was not to be denied as a
180 in the eighth leg helped him secure his
place against Ted in the final.
The first of the finals saw the
Mixed Triples title go to the mixture of youth
and experience as David Pallet, Ash Khayat &
Linda Jones beat Garry Thompson, Dave Calvert &
Dee Bateman 3- 1.
Next up was the Ladies Pairs
finals and the defending champions of Donna
Rainsley & Trish Kidd were playing in their
third consecutive Bunn Leisure Ladies Pairs
final against the pairing of Trina Gulliver &
Lisa Ashton. However after taking the opening
leg the Sussex girls could not stop the two
England players taking the title with a 3-1
victory, Lisa missed the bull for a 161 out
before Trina took out the 25 for the title.
The Men's Pairs final was to be a
repeat of the Ladies as the Surrey pair of Paul
Neate & Aaron Turner took the opening leg when
Aaron took out a 130 finish (60, 20 & Bull) but
the defending Champions Paul Hogan & Paul Gibbs
were not to be denied and after Hogan took out
78 in the second leg it was one way traffic as
the two Paul’s secured another title with a 3-1
victory.
The Girls Youth final was a very
good match as 14 year old Josie Patterson took
out 42 in two darts to take the opening leg
before 17 year old Stacey Ellis showed the form
that has already seen her gain a place in the
senior Essex team by taking the next three legs
for the title, their averages were Josie 19.78
and Stacey 20.99.
The Boy's Youth final was
contested by two 17 year olds and was a close
match all the way through in the best of seven
final. The first four legs went with the throw
before Craig Brown moved ahead by taking the
fifth leg against the darts only for Nick Kenny
to take the sixth after Craig had missed one
dart at the bull for the match. The deciding leg
and the title went to Craig as he took advantage
of winning the bull by finishing 32 in 18 darts
with Nick sitting on 56.
So it was just the two showcase
finals to go with respective winning prizes of
£2,000 for the Ladies and £5,000 for the Mens at
stake.
The Ladies final between England’s
Karen Lawman and Finland’s Kirsi Vinikainen, it
was the Finnish lady that took the first leg and
she did have seven darts to take the second as
well, before Karen took the leg and the next two
for a 3-1 lead, but Kirsi took the fourth leg in
18 darts with the aid of a 180. In the sixth leg
Kirsi missed two darts off 55 to force the match
into a deciding leg, but Karen was not going to
give her any more chances as she finished 40 to
take the title.
It meant that Karen had achieved a
remarkable treble at the England Open as in 2009
she took the Ladies Pairs, in 2010 she won the
Mixed Triples, so she now has the full set and
with it some very valuable points in her quest
for a 2012 Lakeside place.
So onto the last match of a great
weekend as the Men's Singles took to the stage.
In the first leg Gary Robson had already bust
his score only to see Ted Hankey take advantage
with a 117 (60, 17 & Tops) to take the opening
leg. Gary came back to level the match before
taking out 76 in two darts after Ted had missed
a shot on 82, Ted took the fourth leg with a two
dart 81 finish to leave the match delicately
poised at 2-2.
From here on the match was a case
of what could have been for Ted as he missed
doubles in the next three legs as Gary took out
shots of 24, 84 and 107 to put him on the verge
of victory. Just 15 darts later a 106 shot out
rewarded Gary "Robbo" Robson with the 2011
England Open Men's Singles Championship title
2011 and a handsome winner's cheque for £5,000.

SUSSEX COUNTY DARTS
2011
The Annual General
Meeting of the Sussex Darts Organisation was held at the
Roffey Social and Sports club.
The meeting drew an
attendance of more than fifty players and officials and,
apart from the resignation of long serving Chairlady Bev
Banks there were no other changes to the Senior team
management and officials. It was unanimously agreed that
Bev be awarded the
position of County President, vacant since the passing of
Don Smith.
The new post of
technical manager will be held by Dave Ballantine who has
revamped the County website to such good effect over the
last few months.
The Youth team next
season will have two new officers in Andy Mason assisted by
Mark Davis.
It was agreed that
Sussex will not support the proposal to be put at the BDO
AGM to regionalize the Inter Counties League, but will
support the introduction of the best of seven legs format
for the Men’s “A” matches.
A vote to introduce
compulsory attendance at the County AGM for a representative
of each Super League team was passed.
Awards for the
2010/11 season were:

Sussex County Away to Lincolnshire
Final Score 23 - 13 to Lincolnshire.
Womens B lost 5 - 1; Mens B lost 8 - 4; Womens A drew 3 - 3; Mens A lost 7 - 5.
Suffering their
fifth successive
defeat Sussex will
be back in Division
Three next season
after ten years.
Promoted to Division
Two in 2000, with a
brief spell in
Division One from
2001 to 2003, Sussex
this season have
been unable to
recover from the
loss of several “A”
team regulars,
despite the
encouraging form
shown by the
newcomers to the
squad.
With nine changes to
the squad which lost
to Suffolk last
month Sussex were
looking for a
positive result from
the trip to
Gainsborough for the
match against
Lincolnshire With
fellow relegation
threatened
Hertfordshire facing
a difficult fixture
against Division
leaders Dorset,
Sussex went into
this weekend with
high hopes of
securing their
Division Two status.
Sadly our hosts were
in no mood to
sympathise and with
Hertfordshire taking
nineteen points, by
mid Sunday afternoon
Sussex fate was
sealed.
On Saturday the
Ladies ”B” began on
a bright note with
Luci Cunningham,
Littlehampton
(pictured right) winning her second
lady-of-the-match
award in her first
season with a 15.13
average. The
Lincolnshire Ladies
then piled on the
pressure to take the
next five games,
leaving the Mens “B”
facing a 5-1
deficit.
Neil Smith, Crawley
and man-of-the-match
Darren Woolgar,
Newhaven with a
24.57 winning
average, gave the
team a 2-1 lead but
Paul Russell,
Eastbourne and Dan
Grimmett, Mid Sussex
were the only two
winners for Sussex
in the last nine
games meaning an 8-4
defeat, the third of
the season for the
Mens “B”.
The Ladies “A” side
gained their sixth
draw of the season
with wins for Helen
Jones, Lewes, Norma
Self, Hailsham and
Karen Winter,
Littlehampton taking
the
lady-of-the-match
award with a winning
21.78 average.
Norma’s win was a
very creditable 3-0
against Paula
Jacklin, recent
winner of the
Torremolinos Open.
With the match score
at 16-8 to the
hosts, Sussex Mens
“A” team again faced
an uphill struggle
to save the County’s
status.
Craig Deeley, Mid
Sussex began the
fight back with a
3-0 win but by 2pm
Lincolnshire had won
the next three games
and secured the
bonus points. Jason
Yates, Lancing had
an excellent 3-0 win
to make the score
2-3. Further wins
for Sussex by Andy
Derrick, Roffey and
Dean Edlin, Mid
Sussex kept the Mens
“A” on course for a
draw. Then, despite
a tremendous effort
by youngster Joe
Davis, Brighton in
his debut
for Sussex at the
top level, he lost
2-3 to
Lincolnshire’s Carl
Abbiss who had an
award winning 27.08
average, to make the
score 7-4 to the
home side. Playing
for pride Lewes star
Rod Hawkins grabbed
a 3-1 win with a
26.61 average to
take his second
consecutive match
award with Sussex
going down 5-7 and
13-23 overall.
All credit to
Lincolnshire who
outscored Sussex
over the weekend 107
tons to 171 with
maximums 5 to 6.
Sussex finished in
last place in
Division Two after
fellow relegated
Montgomery had their
second win of the
season and they now
face the prospect of
matches against
promoted
Gloucestershire and
Cleveland plus old
friends Norfolk and
Buckinghamshire. The
teams they meet
again after, a ten
year break, include
Gwynedd, Wiltshire,
Avon and
Pembrokeshire.

SUSSEX YOUTH V SURREY
The Sussex Youth team
travelled to Worcester Park for their seventh match of the
season in Division Three of the British Inter Counties Youth
league South but were unable to reverse the early season
result against Surrey at Roffey where they lost 7-10.
Despite going down 6-11 Sussex hold on to second place in
the promotion table.
The under-18 boys
started well with a man-of-the-match performance from Jo
Davis, Brighton winning 2-0 in 28.63, but the home side then
took charge, winning five of the remaining games.
Harry
Annals, Littlehampton, Todd Rainsley, Hailsham and Connor
Levett, Worthing all won for Sussex to make the score 5-4 to
Surrey.
The under-21 girls lost
for the fourth time this season, failing to win a leg in a
3-0 defeat.
With the match score at
4-8 the under-21 boys, looking to gain the bonus points,
scraped to 2-2, thanks to man-of-the-match Greg Upton,
Roffey with a 23.86 winning
average and a walkover for Ant Caswell, Roffey.
This put the pressure on last man Adam Griffiths, Lancing
trying for his first win in three outings, but Ryan
Hitchens kept his unbeaten record this season with a 3-1 win
to give Surrey the 3-2 result.
Next month, Sussex meet
previous champions Hampshire at Roffey where the visitors
will be defending their unbeaten record..

DARTS
The
fourth Easter Open at the Crawley Labour Club, sponsored by
the John Smiths Breweries, proved another great success,
with more than seventy entries from all over the South of
England competing for prize monies in excess of £700.
The Open title
returned to Sussex won by previous winner Tony Ayres, when
he defeated fellow PDC star Ken McNeil, from Alberta Canada,
by 3-2 in the final. The decider proved to be an exciting
match between two professionals, both of whom had featured
in the televised PDC World Championships over the last two
years. Tony took the first and third legs but was matched by
Ken taking legs two and four. The decider brought the crowd
to their feet when Tony wired the double going when going
for a nine dart 501. Both players struggled to clinch the
match but Tony finally checked out on double one to take the
£250 first prize.
Simon Smith, Hastings
and Lee Williams, Surrey were losing semi-finalists. Losing
quarter finalists included last year’s winner Kevin Fishwick
from Crawley, Surrey’s Kurtis Atkins and Steve Lovett and
from Brighton Darren Banks
The
Ladies Singles entry was double that of last year and the
final featured two County players. The first prize of £50
was won by Surrey’s team manager Jane Lewis defeating last
year’s winner Rhonda West, the Sussex team manager, by 3-0
in the final.
Losing semi-finalists were
Jill Miles, Hastings and Sam Harding, Lewes.
The Youth Singles event
had a disappointing entry and was won by the in form Joe
Davis, Brighton, beating local youngster Owen Grantham 2-0
in the final.
The day’s events were
concluded with the ever-popular Flying Pairs attracting more
than fifty entries. The final was a close run affair,
won 2-1 by the Worthing/Bognor duo Dayle Smith and Matt
Bourner, beating Lee Williams teamed with Labour Club
manager Jim Ward.
Losing semi-finalists
were Peter Phelan/Mick Clarke and Kevin Fishwick/Tony Oak.

SUSSEX “HOLSTEN” ROFFEY OPEN – 2011 Week 2
The second of the new series of Open Competitions at the
Roffey Club again attracted a good attendance, despite the
clash with other events.
Essex youngster Harry Miles took time off from University
and made a happy return to the Club where he made his mark a
couple of years ago in the Sussex Grand Prix series.
This time he won the Blue Riband Mens Singles defeating
Brighton’s Dan Waller by 3-0 in the final, to collect the
£200 “Holsten “ sponsored prize. Losing semi-finalists were
Ian Perkins, Brighton and Eastbourne’s Paul Russell.
A
welcome return to form for Eastbourne’s Lisa Tanner when she
won the Ladies Singles event with its’ £32 prize defeating
Kent based Sue Bird 3-2 in the final.
Dan Waller made up for his defeat in the Singles final when
he partnered Phil Watham, Middlesex to take the £80 prize in
the Mens Pairs, beating John Jenkinson, Surrey and Harry
Miles 3-1 in the final.
The Hailsham pairing of Marcia Knight and Teresa Weir proved
successful in the Ladies Pairs when they won the £50 prize,
defeating Rhonda West and Luci Cunningham 3-2 in another
close fought final.
Harry Annals was the defeated Youth Singles finalist back
in the first Roffey Open in February, but he made no mistake
this time when he defeated his Bognor team mate Joe Osman
2-1 in the final .
The last event saw the first win of the day for a Surrey
player when Tania Blake teamed up with Crawley’s Dan
Bradford to take the £50 prize in the Flying Pairs
competition. They beat Luci Cunningham and Craig Stoner by
2-0 in the final.
Of
the seventy entries on the day, twenty-five players shared
the total prize money, which exceeded £800.

YOUTH
DARTS
SUSSEX
YOUTH V HAMPSHIRE - April 2011
The
Sussex Youth team once again were unable to break their long
run of poor results against the unbeaten League leaders
Hampshire in the match at the Roffey Club, in Division Three
of the British Inter Counties Youth league South.
The
under-18 boys were outscored and went 7-0 down before Connor
Durham, Littlehampton and man-of-the-match Connor Levett,

COUNTIES DARTS - SUSSEX v SUFFOLK
A fourth defeat on the trot has put Sussex
in imminent danger of relegation from Division Two in the
“Rileys” BICC. At the Roffey Club Suffolk proved too strong
for the home side, winning 23-13 and, to make things worse,
both fellow strugglers Hertfordshire and Berkshire gained
seventeen points each.
This dumps Sussex into the bottom places of
the table three points away from safety all despite Sussex
outscoring Suffolk over the weekend by 217 tons to 193 and
hitting eight maximums to ten.
 On
Saturday the Ladies ”B” drew for the third time this season
thanks to wins for the Haywards Heath pair Denise Peake and
Laura Macintosh and lady of the match Kelly Ryan, Eastbourne
with a 15.10 average.
Sussex Mens “B” team suffered their second
defeat in eight matches going down 8-4 Once again four of
the lost games were by a 3-2 score with vital missed doubles
deciding.
The winners for Sussex were Darren Woolgar,
Newhaven, Dan Waller, Brighton, Paul Russell, Eastbourne and
man-of-the-match youngster Joe Davis, Brighton with a 28.59
average.
The Ladies “A” side fought back after losing
the first three games with Helen Jones, Lewes taking the
lady-of-the-match award winning in 18.72.
Sam Harding. Lewes won the fifth game,
beating ex England star Sue Talbot 3-1 and it was left to
Sam’s team mate, Ladies team manager Rhonda West, to save
the day for Sussex.. Sadly birthday girl Rhonda lost 3-2 to
give Suffolk the 4-2 win.
With
the match score
at
15-9 to the visitors, Sussex Mens “A” team again faced a
tough battle to save the day and tough it proved to be,
after Suffolk took the first six games securing the bonus
points by 2.30 on Sunday afternoon.
Brighton’s Ian Perkins stopped the rot with a
fighting 3-2 win followed by the return to winning ways for
Rod Hawkins, Lewes who grabbed the match award with a 28.72
average. Geoff Taylor, Brighton and Dean Edlin, Mid Sussex
won two of the last four games for Sussex to make the final
score 8-4 to Suffolk. All credit to the visitors whose
finishing skills were outstanding on the day and included
six ton plus checkouts.
Sussex
travel to Lincolnshire next month for the final match
this season and hopes of remaining in Division Two will
depend on their result and that of the Hertfordshire home
match against promotion seeking Dorset and Berkshire’s trip
to Suffolk. .

SUSSEX
YOUTH V SURREY
The
Sussex Youth team travelled to Worcester Park for their
seventh match of the season in Division Three of the British
Inter Counties Youth league South but were unable to reverse
the early season result against Surrey at Roffey where they
lost 7-10.
Despite
going down 6-11 Sussex hold on to second place in the
promotion table. MORE |

CONGRATULATIONS
this month go to 13-year-old Essex Youth Open winner Joe
Davis from Brighton for a brilliant victory at Colchester.
A strong field of 72 entries included two
England internationals, but it was the relatively
inexperienced youngsters who reached the semi-finals. Joe
won 3-0 against Tony Field to reach the final where he met
16-year-old Essex player Rhys Hayden.
Rhys went 2-0 up but Joe came back with two
18-dart legs to level. and then clinch the match to win 3-2. |

DARTS
2010/11 - Sussex Mens Winter Super League Championship
Worthing won this season’s
Sussex Mens Winter Super League Championship in a playoff,
which featured five ton plus finishes, at the Roffey Social
Club, defeating the East Division winners Lewes by 5-0.
The Globe team had previously
won their Division by twelve points from last year’s
champions Roffey and they have now achieved their ambition
to represent Sussex in the British Champions Cup to be
staged in August, something they were denied as Summer
League Champions two years ago when the qualification was
changed.
Lewes were undefeated in
winning their Division this season by fifteen points from
Newhaven but again could not overcome their Roffey bogey,
this being their third defeat here in playoffs. MORE

INTER COUNTIES DARTS
- HERTFORDSHIRE V SUSSEX
Suffering their third defeat
in succession Sussex have slumped from fifth to within one
point of the dreaded relegation zone. in the “Rileys” BICC
Division Two table.
At the Emerald Club in Welwyn
Garden City, Hertfordshire gained their revenge for the
23-13 defeat at the Roffey Club last season and ended Sussex
hopes of a promotion place this season with a 21-15 win.
On Saturday the Ladies ”B”
suffered their fourth defeat this season going down 5-1 with
Luci Cunningham, Littlehampton the only winner.
Sussex
Mens “B” team remain in second spot in their section
after a 6-6 result
They showed their fighting
spirit coming back from 5-1 down, after Andy Macintosh,
Roffey was the only winner in the first half. Team managers
Paul Russell, Eastbourne and Geoff Taylor, Brighton began
the recovery, followed by a man-of-the-match performance
from Ken Sowerby, Worthing who won with a 25.61 average..
Joe
Davis, Brighton and Gary Edgar, Newhaven then secured the
draw in a match where Sussex outscored the home side but
lost four games by 3-2 with vital missed doubles.
After a bright start, with
Norma Self, Eastbourne and Helen Jones, Mid Sussex both
winning 3-2, the Ladies “A” team were hard pressed to gain
their fifth draw in seven outings, against a side who had
not taken a point this season. Karen Winter, Littlehampton
won the lady-of-the-match award with a 22.77 average.
With the match score at 10-14
to the home side, Sussex Mens “A” team were in for an
uphill battle for the bonus points.
Michael Hammond, Newhaven won
the first game and Craig Deeley, Mid Sussex justified his
promotion to the “A” team with a match award win in 27.64 in
a high scoring game. But once again the Sussex middle order
fell apart and by 4pm Hertfordshire had reached the nineteen
wins they needed to take the bonus points.
Wins for Andy Derrick, Roffey,
Ian Perkins, Brighton and Dean Edlin, Mid Sussex kept the
Mens “A” side in with a hope of a draw, but Rod Hawkins,
Brighton lost the final game 3-2 to give Hertfordshire a 7-5
win.
Sussex have two matches
remaining this season to save their Division Two status,
with a home fixture against fifth placed Suffolk and a tough
trip to Lincolnshire, who are currently in third spot.
